During the time when Genma took Ranma on a decade-long training voyage to improve their martial arts skills, he insisted on training Ranma in the Neko-ken only for Ranma to end up critically injured much to everyones surprise Ranma was kidnapped from the hospital. Genma found him years later in a near catatonic state. Continuing the trip he took Ranma to Jusenkyo in China - a place which he believed to be a training ground. However, because of Genma's ignorance of the Chinese language, he did not realize that the ground was unfrequented because it was cursed. Genma realized all too late the mistake he made, after he into Shonmaoniichuan, the Spring of Drowned Panda.
Despite the fact that he was cursed, Genma still brought Ranma back to Japan to fulfill an agreement that he had made with his longtime friend and fellow martial artist Soun Tendo: Ranma would marry one of Soun's daughters and carry on the Anything Goes School of Martial Arts. After Genma explained his version of what happened Soun was disgusted by Ranma’s withdrawn nature and wrote him off as weak. Genma currently resides in the Tendo Dojo along with Ranma focusing all of his and Soun’s attention on training Akane as Ranma was obviously unsuitable for the position of heir.
Months passed in a relatively monotonous way. Akane trained with Genma and Soun, who regained his passion for the Art with the arrival of his friend and his daughter's dedication. Akane's skill in the Saotome branch of the Anything Goes was very limited due to her temper and tendency to use strength instead of speed, but she advanced pretty well on the Tendo branch. Soun and Genma sparred everyday and congratulated themselves for starting a class in the afternoons. Soun, Akane and Genma ignored Ranma's existence as best as they could.
Genma became aware that Ranma had came back to his senses when he tried to steal his food only for Ranma to stop him. This caused Genma that he was no longer cursed with an inept son.
