Yugi Mutou is the grandson of Sugoroku Mutou Kuramitsu together with the spirit of Pharaoh Atem, he holds the title "King of Games". Yugi is kind-hearted, caring, selfless, understanding, considerate, and child-like. He is good at games, riddles, and puzzles, especially Duel Monsters.
Yugi possesses the three thousand-year-old mystical Millennium Puzzle, which allows his body to bear host to the spirit/soul of the Puzzle, Yami Yugi. Yugi was initially unaware of his existence and control of Yugi's body, and partial or complete control of his mind, would involuntarily shift to Yami when Yugi himself or his best friends are in danger, or when Yugi is under emotional stress or mad.
He lives with his paternal grandfather, Solomon Mutou, and his mother Yuki Mutou. Yugi's father (Solomon's son) had to leave with his mother quickly for medical reasons. Yugi is part of a close-knit group of best friends: Joey Wheeler, Tristan Taylor, and Téa Gardner as well as Ryo Bakura. Unlike his friends who opted to use American names as aliases Yugi always goes by his original Japanese name. Yugi's friends often cheer him on from the sidelines, and Joey has dueled at his side. Yugi has been friends with Téa since childhood and has a romantic crush on her. Téa has been shown to have romantic feelings for both Yugi and Yami Yugi.

Worried about how weird is grandfather had been acting Yugi hurried back to the Kame Game Shop with his friends stopping upon seeing the elderly man who often complained about his back going out dusting the top shelves ... while hanging from the ceiling by one foot clamping onto a banister rail. The group was surprised by the arrival of Professor Hawkins who was shocked to see that his friend was still able to use his martial skills.
By this point Yugi’s mother had arrived as well so Joey just decided to go into the shop to see what was going on. Only to promptly be attacked by Solomon who mistook him for Seto. After his mother berated Solomon for throwing knives at people. Yugi asked what Kaiba did to him to warrant such a reaction. So Solomon sat down and finally explained to Yugi that he was that he was apart of the Kuramitsu clan a galactic empire. The then went on to explain that the Seto he afraid of was actually the "Devil Princess of Jurai,". Afraid that Seto had set her sights on Yugi Solomon engaged him to Tea and Rebecca to prevent her from matching him up with anyone. Yugi sat down to contemplate this revelation as Solomon ran away from his daughter-in-law who didn’t like his plans for her son.
There conversation was interrupted by Bastet coming to return the Millennium Puzzle to Yugi.
